Tyra Sanchez is the drag queen name of James Ross, a performer, artwork designer, Tyra Sanchez Clothing Co. owner and Season 2 winner of "RuPaul's Drag Race".

Drag Name Origin

Tyra Sanchez full drag name is Tyra-Symoné Sanchez. Tyra means "God of Battle" and came from her niece's name Tyra Nicole who was born premature and was an inspiration to Tyra since she fought for her life. Symoné is from Raven Symoné who she admires. Sanchez is from her drag family.

During her season, Tyra spoke candidly about her periods of homelessness and personal challenges prior to auditioning for and being selected to appear on the show. Sanchez glamorous old-school drag style made her a favorite of the judges although her acerbic personality earned her the disdain of her fellow contestants. After winning, she served as a drag professor and mentor on the second season of "RuPaul's Drag U".

  • Tyra's drag mother is Angelica Sanchez Jones, an Orlando based performer and make part of the Haus of Sanchez (founded by Tyra's drag grandmother, pageant legend Stasha Sanchez);
  • She have two biological sons, being one of four contestants to have children. The others are Nicole Paige Brooks, Tempest DuJour and Mrs. Kasha Davis;
  • In 2012 a Kickstarter campaign was set up to help fund "Drag Dad", a documentary that would center around Tyra and her life as a single father and a drag performer. The Kickstarted raised $20,641, surpassing its initial goal of $14,000. However, it is yet to be announced and has most likely seized production;
  • In 2017, she made a sarcastic post announcing the death of Morgan McMichaels in an attempt to "throw shade" on her for her bad behavior with Tyra and other drags in nightclubs and promote her SoundCloud account. Morgan denounced the fake announcement and Tyra underwent backlash from fans. Following the controversy, Tyra released her first EP titled "Dear Drag Race Fans Book I";
  • In late May 2017, she leaked Tatianna's phone number on her Instagram (before it gets suspended). Then Tatianna leaked Tyra's number and she went live on her Facebook answering calls;
  • In April 2018, she was banned from DragCon after threatening Tatianna, Phi Phi O'Hara and some fans online. After that, Tyra started making sarcastic posts saying for people not to go for the event because something bad would happen there. This made some fans believe she would really do something bad;
  • Tyra and Aquaria (Season 10 winner) are the youngest winners, both winning at age 21;
  • She is the 1st winner to have never ended up in the bottom two;
  • The prizes Tyra won for winning her season included a lifetime supply of NYX cosmetics, a spokesmodel role for NYX cosmetics' site, an exclusive one year public relations contract with LGBT firm Project Publicity, a featured spot in an LA Eyeworks campaign, a place on Logo's "Drag Race Tour" and a cash prize of $25,000 (the 3rd lowest cash prize ever awarded on the show).
